Stages of Plastic Injection Molding

There are many months of work that go into bringing a product from ideation to production. Follow this step-by-step guide to make sure you’re on track to effectively execute the product development process for plastic injection molding.

1. Ideation

Brainstorm product idea: look, functionality, material, size, etc.

2. Research

Competitor study and analysis of product strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT Analysis)

3. Material Selection

Chose the material that best fits your budget and product functionality needs

4. Product Cost Budget

Create a comprehensive budget including all product development factors: design, tooling, packaging, etc.

5. Initial Design Concept/ CAD Design

Work with designer to nail down form & function of your product design

6. Creating Pricing Structure

Determine what you need your final product cost to be (retail, wholesale, & cost to manufacture)

7. Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DFMA)

Design your product for ease of manufacturing and efficiency of assembly

8. Lock Down Production Cost

Select an injection molding factory to work with and determine cost to manufacture

9. Prototyping

Create a prototype to test product design & functionality prior to full production

10. Select Packaging

Finalize packaging direction: packaging type & design

11. Building Tooling

If prototype was successful, work with tooling company to build a mold for plastic injection molding

12. Product Testing of First Sample

Test your product in real life scenarios, get consumer feedback, etc.

13. Product Revisions

Make necessary changes to improve any problems that may have arose during testing

14. Approve Product for Production

Launch full production of product
